TEAM USA’s quest for basketball gold at the 2024 Olympics may not be as straightforward as some assume.

LeBron James and Steph Curry are a part of the talented team looking to win the USA’s fifth-straight basketball Olympic gold medal.

Team USA met up in Las Vegas, Nevada, earlier this month before flying to Abu Dhabi for a series of training games.

They were almost humbled by Australia on Monday, winning 98-92 after holding off a late comeback.

An unnamed source – cited by The Daily Mail – claims there is scope for potential “embarrassment” at the Games due to the big personalities in the team.

“The ego that lies within the team, everyone is out for their own and not for the team as a whole,” the source told the outlet.

“That can and will be a disaster if they all don’t change their thought process, they have to play like a team.”

The source added it is “suspect and troubling” that the team has not been “dominating” in recent warm-up games.

Prior to the six-point win over Australia, Team USA beat Canada 86-72.

“Many international teams that have played together longer are more cohesive and have a decent chance of beating the USA team,” they added.

Cooper Flagg, a 17-year-old freshman who has yet to play a game in college, was reportedly the stand-out player in a recent scrimmage.

Coach Steve Kerr admitted after the let-off against Australia his players were yet to gel as a cohesive unit.

“We don’t have the continuity like a team like Australia,” Kerr admitted, per NBA.com.

“That means we have to adapt pretty quickly, in a couple of weeks. It takes a little time to become a team.”

Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the win, while guard Devin Booker was next up with 16 points.

Team USA led by 24 midway through the third quarter before a collapse saw them take the game by just 6 points.

“Third quarter, we started turning the ball over,” Kerr continued.

“We gave up a ton of points at the basket. Back cuts, offensive boards and so, the game shifted.

“It’s a good lesson for us. Better to learn that lesson now than later.

“And this will be a good tape for us to watch. But I give Australia a ton of credit.

“They were great. They fought. They were really physical. Took it to us in the last quarter and a half and really made it a game.”

Team USA will face Serbia in a warm-up game in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

They will then begin their Olympic bid against the same nation on July 28.
