Cleveland Browns star Myles Garrett, arguably one of the best players in the NFL, is enjoying watching the WNBA this offseason. While attending the 2024 ESPY Awards in Los Angeles, Garrett, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, was asked about the biggest question surrounding the league: Who should win Rookie of the Year?
As it stands, it’s a close race between Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark and Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese. The 28-year-old, three-time First-Team All-Pro, took a long pause before answering the divisive question.
“Can we do a co? That’s been done before.” Garrett said. While the NBA named two Rookie of the Year winners during the 1970-71 season, (Dave Cowens and Geoff Petrie) 1994-95 season (Jason Kidd and Grant Hill) and 1999-2000 season (Elton Brand and Steve Francis), the WNBA has never named joint winners.
“Let’s do it… Reese and Caitlin,” Garrett continued. “I mean, Reese has been playing well with her streak of double-doubles. But Caitlin has been putting up great numbers as a rookie, as well. Honestly, great numbers for just in general.”
While Garrett’s answer may seem like a cop out, former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas shares the same view. “They’re both making history,” Arenas said during the latest installment of “Gil’s Arena.”
Analyzing WNBA Rookie of the Year Race Between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese
The Live on the Line crew discusses the WNBA Rookie of the Year race between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese.
“They’re both doing something different, right. One’s a guard. One’s a big,” he continued, noting their obvious differences. “They’re both doing great… and whoever wins (Rookie of the Year), the other one is going to feel like they got cheated… It’s easier for both to win.”
