Aces’ Kate Martin suffers scary leg injury as teammates shield her from public

Las Vegas Aces rookie Kate Martin went down with a scary leg injury Tuesday night, and she was seen screaming on the court as teammates looked to console the young guard.

Martin suffered what was labeled as a lower right leg injury, one that had her teammates concerned.

They surrounded Martin and held up towels around their young teammate to shield her from view as she lay on the hardwood late in the first quarter of the 93-85 loss.

Aces coach Becky Hammon didn’t have an update on the injury after the game, but said she knows Martin is “freakin’ tough.”

Martin had to be helped off the court by training staff after the injury, though after initial testing she later walked back onto the court in black sweatpants under her own power.

WNBA MVP favorite and Aces center A’ja Wilson said she was trying to “take care of her rookie, no matter what” after the injury.

“She’s one of us,” Wilson said after the game, as captured by X account @HoopHerSpeaks. “She’s our sister and someone that we will always depend and count on, but at the same time, cameras be getting in your business and we don’t want that and don’t need that. We try to protect her peace, her mental and just her emotion.

“We shouldn’t be afraid to show emotions. … Cameras don’t give us privacy and I get it that’s their job to get the shot, but I think for us to kind of cut on that, we were going to protect her at all costs because you never know what the internet or people may do. So my thing was making sure that she was just good and that we were there for her.”

Martin, a former Iowa teammate of Caitlin Clark, has seemingly left a good mark on her veteran teammates in short time.

She received some rookie hazing in June as the team bus left without her.

“Don’t be late to the bus,” Wilson posted with laughing emojis at the time.

Without Martin, the Aces’ comeback attempt against the Sky fell short.

Wilson again put up monster numbers, tallying 28 points and bringing down 14 rebounds with five blocks and three steals.

The Aces are battling for playoff seeding, and now sit at 16-8 on the season, tied for the fourth-best record in the WNBA.
