The Milwaukee Bucks were featured in the news earlier this week when Jrue Holiday reopened old wounds by discussing his sudden exit from the team on The Draymond Green Show.
Controversy followed, with some saying that Holiday was right in saying that the Bucks should have given him at least a little notice, while others argued that the front office was correct in keeping it all a secret. It’s certainly a debatable topic, and while that will get all of the media attention, it was not the most controversial thing that came out of this interview.
Draymond Green, the Golden State Warriors forward and host of the show, highlighted how the Bucks also parted with shooting guard Grayson Allen in the trade to acquire Damian Lillard, calling him the Milwaukee Bucks’ second-best perimeter defender behind Holiday on last season’s roster and using that as ammo to say explain why the team’s defense ultimately took a step back.
Draymond Green’s head-turning statement about last year’s Bucks team has fans baffled
Understandably, many Milwaukee Bucks fans couldn’t believe their ears when they heard these words come out of Draymond Green’s mouth.
And another.
None of what is about to be said is meant to disrespect Grayson Allen, but in no way, shape or form was he the team’s second-best perimeter defender on that roster. Not only is their the elephant in the room in Giannis Antetokounmpo, but he also wasn’t better than Wesley Matthews, Jevon Carter and arguably both Jae Crowder and Pat Connaughton, who had down years.
Bucks fans will recall watching Grayson Allen get consistently attacked by taller wings in the playoffs for two straight seasons. Against the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Jimmy Butler, among others, viciously went after Allen again and again. To be fair, those are all great players that not many players can truly slow down most nights.
However, the second-best perimeter defender on a team does not get hunted that consistently.
Wesley Matthews didn’t play every single defensive possession like his life depended on it to be disrespected like this. Jevon Carter was never the tallest player on the court, but he still provided resistance no matter who he was matched up against. We don’t even need to discuss how versatile Giannis Antetokounmpo is defensively.
Draymond Green can certainly have his opinion but not without Milwaukee Bucks fans pushing back against it.
