In the 2020 NBA playoffs, Jimmy Butler’s performance has been nothing short of extraordinary. He carried the Miami Heat to the NBA Finals, showcasing incredible leadership and clutch abilities.
After a stunning Game 3 in the Finals, where Butler recorded a 40-point triple-double and led the Heat to victory without their second and third best players, many fans were left with a familiar feeling.
Butler’s tenacity and fearlessness on the court were reminiscent of Michael Jordan, leading to one of the NBA’s craziest conspiracies: Is Jimmy Butler actually Michael Jordan’s son?
The theory is not entirely baseless. If we compare Butler’s face to Jordan’s, the resemblance is striking. Furthermore, Butler’s backstory adds an intriguing layer.
Born in 1989, Butler’s father abandoned the family when he was just a baby, and his mother kicked him out at age 13. Publicly, Butler’s father remains unknown, which fuels the speculation.
This conspiracy gained traction in February 2016 when Therese Owens, a sports gossip blog, received an anonymous tip.
The tip claimed that Jordan had an unwanted child in 1988 and paid the mother to keep quiet to protect his public image and marriage.
This child supposedly took the mother’s last name, Butler. Additionally, it was reported that Jordan attempted to visit the hospital and sent 23 roses, a nod to his jersey number.
Further fueling the theory, Butler’s birthdate and Jordan’s schedule align suspiciously well. Jordan played a game in Houston in February 1989, seven months before Butler’s birth.
However, a tip suggested the conception happened in December 1988, when the Bulls played in Dallas—a plausible scenario given Dallas’s proximity to Houston.
While intriguing, the theory has significant flaws. It’s difficult to believe that Butler’s mother would keep Jordan’s identity a secret, especially after the alleged payments stopped.
Financially struggling, she could have exposed Jordan for fame and money. Moreover, if Butler knew Jordan was his father, his feelings towards him would likely be complicated, yet there is no public animosity between them.
In conclusion, while the notion that Jimmy Butler is Michael Jordan’s son is fascinating, it remains a conspiracy theory with many holes.
Regardless, Butler’s journey from a troubled youth to an NBA superstar is a testament to his resilience and hard work, deserving respect and admiration.
