Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls won six championships in the 1990s, but some were more special than others. In 1996, the Bulls clinched the title on Father’s Day, leading to a heartfelt tribute from the GOAT.
In 1996, Michael Jordan won his first championship since he retired after the 1992-93 season. He returned in 1995, but it took a season for him and the Bulls to get back to the top. And since it happened on Father’s Day, he dedicated the win to his late dad, James Jordan Sr.
“I know he’s watching. To my wife and kids, to my mother, brother, and sister, this is for Daddy. I’m very happy,” Michael Jordan said after beating the Seattle SuperSonics.
The interview took place right on the court and Jordan went on to talk about how much his children mean to him after talking about his father. Following the interview, MJ went to the locker room and reportedly broke down in tears. He did seem emotional throughout the whole process.
Michael Jordan didn’t put up gaudy numbers in the Game 6 win that sealed the title for the Chicago Bulls, but he still led his team in scoring. He had 22 points on the night, also grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out seven assists. Jordan wanted to get back to the top when he returned, and it’s fitting that it happened on Father’s Day, considering the tragedy he and his family had to deal with.
Michael Jordan’s Father Was Tragically Murdered In 1993
Michael Jordan’s father meant a lot to him, he once revealed how James Jordan was his emotional support system. So in July 1993, when he went missing and was subsequently found to have been murdered, it almost broke MJ. It was one of the major factors contributing to his first retirement and a brief stint as a baseball player.
Two men, Larry Demery and Daniel Green, were arrested and convicted of his murder, revealed to have initially wanted to steal his car. James’ passing had a massive impact on Jordan, the emotional toll was something he would go on to speak about years later. The fact that Jordan recovered from this horrific tragedy to come back and win three more championships is a true testament to his mental strength and greatness.
